Summary

Friends, our Gospel for today is the evocative scene of Jesus healing a man who cannot hear and cannot speak. This man is beautifully symbolic of many in our culture today: we don’t listen to God, and therefore we can’t speak clearly about God. To us, as to him, Jesus says, “Ephphatha!”—be opened to the Word of God!

0:39.3	Peace be with you. Friends, our gospel for today is one of my favorites and it's such a
0:43.8	evocative scene and it's one of Jesus miracles now that he was a wonder
0:50.9	worker I think is undeniably true. It's one of the most basic things we know about
0:57.0	him. That he was a preacher of divine truth and he died in the cross and so on, you know, the historians all agree.
1:03.4	And I think it's hard to deny if you're taking the Gospels as your basic evidence
1:08.0	that Jesus was a wonder worker.
1:11.7	Now, did he do it just to show off? Did he do it just to show hey look how much
1:16.7	power I've got? No keep in mind Jesus as St Paul said is the icon of the invisible God. He's the visible representation of
1:27.0	the God of Israel. And so whatever he's doing, whatever he's saying is
1:31.8	representing now to the world who God is and what
1:35.6	God is about. What does God want? He wants his creation to recover its lost integrity. So it's a biblical intuition that sin affects
1:46.8	not just us. That's fundamental in the book of Genesis. It's not just an anthropological problem. No, no, sin affects all of creation.
1:57.8	All of creation is compromised. And so God's rescue operation is not just directed toward human beings, it's directed toward all of nature.
2:08.0	So Jesus, the healer, think now of Yahoy, the God of of Israel who wants to knit his creation back together.
2:17.5	He wants to bring peace and healing to us but also healing to the wider creation.
2:22.6	Listen now how from our first reading the prophet Isaiah puts it,
2:27.0	here is your God.
2:29.0	He comes with vindication, with divine recompense, he comes to save you.
