Our scriptural text today comes from 1 Kings chapter 3 and verse 7 through 9 in the new King James Version.

Notice there these words, now, O Lord, my God, you have made your servant king instead of my father, David, but I'm a little child.

I do not know how to go out or come in, and your servant is in the midst of your people whom you

have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted. Therefore, give to your servant an

understanding heart to judge your people that I may discern between good and evil for who is

able to judge this great people of yours. I'm speaking today simply from the subject, be in the know. Be in the know. Be in the know. Be in the

know. Now here is Solomon, the son of David, whom we esteem as the wisest person who ever lived.

And in his great wisdom, even before he had it,

perhaps his greatest demonstration of his wisdom,

was realizing what he did know.

And so he asked God to make up the gap in that. So Solomon asks God as he is essentially given a

blank check by God to say whatever it is that you want, ask me for it. And God gave him that

opportunity and he takes that opportunity and asks God for the ability to be able to discern between good and evil so that he could judge the people righteously.

Now, here's my point, is that if Solomon, in all of his wisdom, had to ask God for wisdom to be able to discern between

good and evil, how much more do we need God's help in discerning between good and evil in

our world? Now, the great prognosticator of the gospel, Charles Spurgeon, said these

words that discernment is not knowing the difference between right and wrong, it's knowing the

difference between right and almost right.

You see the subtlety there?

Satan is very subtle. He's not just bold. He's subtle.

It's the difference between right and almost right.

That's the discernment that we have to get really from God. Mark Driscoll says that
