Hi this is AJ Hoag, Director of Effortless English and I'm going to talk about

beta breakers. Here you see video for the Bay to Breakers event in San Francisco.

The beta breakers is a, well it started as a running race after the

1906 earthquake and very quickly it became kind of a big walking party in the city.

You can see people dress in strange crazy costumes and

people are having parties and people in these different houses that are along the way also play lots of

music and there's house parties. Some people, you can see, make these big floats, they're called,

these big things that they push.

Sometimes they have music on them, big speakers, so people are dancing in the streets and they're drinking and they're going crazy.

And you can see these strange dancing, strange music, strange costumes.

So it's kind of the beginning of spring in San Francisco,

this celebration.

And originally it was a way for people to cheer up to be happier after the big

1906 earthquake. Of course after the earthquake the city was almost destroyed

everybody's very sad.

So they decided to have Beta Breakers, this big race and party and parade across the city.

So it starts at San Francisco Bay

and people walk or run

all the way across the city

to the waves to the ocean. It's about seven miles.
