Summary

Jenny and Annie continue looking at Highland clan culture, exploring the sluagh-ghairm.Sluagh-ghairm is Gaelic and translates to ‘battle cry’ but it has multi-layered meanings. Sluagh-ghairm is also where we get the English word ‘slogan’ used in advertising. A Highland clan would choose a sluagh-ghairm to showcase their bravery, values, or very often as the gathering place for the fighting men. Join Jenny and Annie as they explore the battle cry of the Clan Macnaghten/MacNaughton and the legends of Fraoch Eilean, an island of Loch Awe. This is a podcast where we charge into the heritage and history of Scotland,

0:20.4

yelling at the top of our lungs

0:21.9

while trying desperately not to trip. I'm Jenny, an extra from Braveheart. And I'm Annie,

somehow an archivist, happily watching this battle charge from the nearby forest, surrounded

by fairies and squibbles all quietly having a picnic.

0:40.3

In this episode we are further exploring Highland clan culture by taking a look and a listen

0:47.3

to the different clans slug Yarram. The slug was the name given to the male population who were called to battle, the clans army.

And so the Slug Yerim is Gaelic, and it translates to war cry.

1:03.0

Thus, the sluig Yerame, like all war cries, was roared by the Klansmen as they charged into battle,

1:10.0

rushing towards potential death,

1:12.8

claymords and plads of flying. And the word that we use in English, slogan, that sleazy advertising

1:20.9

term, is actually derived from our Gaelic slug-Yerim. So this phrase was the army's fighting slogan

1:30.1

that their sleazy advertisers came up with.

1:34.0

And you'll sometimes see these war cries

1:36.1

called slogans in English

1:37.9

when the marketing department has been involved.

1:42.1

But the slug-Garim often represents a physical place, a real location. It's not just a

1:50.9

battle cry, but the Sluggerim is the rallying cry to gather the fighting force. And it's the place

1:59.7

where the man would gather before battle.
