Summary

Basketball season is over for Ohio State and spring football practice resumes this week for the Buckeyes. What does Chris Holtmann need to accomplish in 2022-23 in order to get the fans on his side?

On the football front, this will be the week when the Buckeyes start implementing schematic changes on both sides of the ball; mostly on defense of course. But there will be tweaks on offense as well with Justin Frye now leading the offensive line.

Dave Biddle flies solo on this edition of the Monday 5ish to discuss that and much more.

Good morning, Bucknotters. Welcome to the Bucknotts Morning 5 here on Monday, March 22nd.

0:06.0

Excuse me, March 21st, 2022. Getting ahead of myself. I am Dave Biddle, flag solo on today's show.

0:12.0

We're going to talk some basketball and some Ohio State football on today's show. If you have any questions,

0:17.0

you can submit them in the comments section. I'll try to get to as many as I can.

0:21.0

Let's start with basketball. Obviously, Ohio State season ended yesterday in the NCAA tournament

0:26.0

with a 71-61 loss to Villanova. Buckeyes hung in there, got it down to two there.

0:34.0

I started screaming at my TV. I was getting excited there and Villanova pulled away.

0:38.0

Disappointing. At least Ohio State was able to win one game.

0:43.0

I know that's not the standard, but I felt like that was very important to at least win a game in this year's tournament.

0:49.0

And we'll see. I know a lot of you are wondering, is Chris Holtman's job on the line?

0:54.0

Absolutely not. And I don't think it would have been, even if they would have lost to Loyola of Chicago.

1:00.0

Gene Smith was going to give him another year, regardless. And he's got an excellent recruiting class coming in.

1:05.0

Here's the problem as I look at next year, though. While this recruiting class is very good,

1:10.0

and we talk about this on Friday's show with J-Book, it's not like Elite. It's really good.

1:15.0

It's like the fifth best class in the nation, fourth best class right around there.

1:18.0

But it's not like the Thad Five. They're not bringing in Greg Oden and Mike Oden and those guys.

1:24.0

I mean, this is a really good class, but it's not Elite. It's not the type of class where you can just start five freshmen and make a final four.

1:31.0

So there could even be lumps next year. Now, if Malachi Brainham comes back, that changes their calculus big time.

1:38.0

Malachi Brainham comes back to add with this freshman class.

1:42.0

He was a zed key then a year older, and some of the other guys they have.

1:45.0

Then they might have something working there. But man, Malachi Brainham is now projected as a first round pick.

1:52.0

If I had to bet, I think he's going to leave, but he's not projected as a lottery pick or anything.
