I pop open the bottle of champagne, and I'm sipping the champagne, pacing the apartment,

and I'm running through scenarios in my head of what am I going to say, and how is this

going to go?

In just over a week, Bonita Alexander had been hit with a series of shocks about Paulo

Macierini. The celebrity-filled Italian wedding, Paulo had been planning was a mirage,

and the inquiry at Carolinska Institute in Sweden had found him guilty of misconduct.

Paulo was about to arrive at her apartment. She had seen him in person for the first time

since his carefully crafted image had crumbled before her eyes.

Bonita took three deep breaths, a swig of champagne, and then she steeled herself for

the conversation to come.

I opened the door, and he's standing there in his beautiful suit jacket. He's always wearing

one, and holding this briefcase that he always carried, and he just says, hi, my love.

Just like, nothing is wrong. I said, hi, my love. I said, why do you tell me what the hell

is going on? And I just started screaming. He couldn't get three feet in the door. I'm

like, why did you lie to me about this? Why did you lie to me about that? What about this?

Paulo didn't say a word. He just stood in the doorway holding his bag.

And I'm banging in the wall, and I'm out of control, basically. And I'm crying, and I'm

yelling, and he doesn't say a word. He just says, perfectly quiet. And finally, I calm

down enough that I sort of back up a few steps, and he sort of looks at me and he said, can

I come in?
