This is the political scene, a weekly conversation with New Yorker

writers and editors about politics. It's Thursday, April 11th. I'm Dorothy Wickenden,

executive editor of The New Yorker. In the past few months, North Korea has done the following.

It's tested a nuclear weapon, withdrawn from the 1953 Korean armistice,

and threatened a preemptive nuclear strike against the U.S.

It now appears to be preparing to test missiles with a range of over 2,000 miles.

The Obama administration's playing down the threat, but also paying close attention.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said yesterday,

North Korea has been with its bellicose rhetoric, with its actions,

skating very close to a dangerous line.

Our country is fully prepared to deal with any contingency, any action that North Korea may take or any provocation.
