From Nice Guy Productions World Headquarters overlooking the glamorous San Fernando Valley, I'm Mick Garris and this is Postmortem.

Many people feel that the horror genre is something you'll grow out of, something intended for adolescence, something to be ashamed of in your adult years.

I come from a generation known as Monster Kids, those who grew up in the 50s, 60s and even the 70s, when monster movies and horror films became readily available on television and later on home video.

It was a great time to be a kid. Every Saturday afternoon or late at night, the universal horror films would run, as well as off-brand genre fair like the four skulls of Jonathan Drake or the Beats of Yucca Flats.

The movies got darker and more explicit over the years and soon with special effects and makeup technology becoming much more sophisticated, there were few nightmares that could not be displayed on the screen, credibly and yes, horribly.

To the young horror agency grow up was a common cry from parents to teachers and even from peers. The horror fans were the outsiders and it was expected that they would evolve out of their fascination with horrific beasts and viscera, and most of them did.

However, I contend that horror can be the most imaginative, dramatic, provocative and introspective kind of stories that can be told.

Not all of it mind you, some of it is just loud and abrasive and in your face and embraced just for its shock value, providing us something that our parents would never enjoy.

But monsters are metaphor intended or not and the depths of characters created by the likes of King and Barker and Carpenter and Cronenberg and so many more make the horror genre to me a genre of everlasting freshness, depth and imagination.

When I was a monster movie loving kid who was writing scary stories and making little 8 millimeter movies, my grandmother once said, where is all that gruesome stuff going to get you?

Well Nana, aside from a lifelong career, it brings me joy and introspection. I love being scared and I love to scare, but I also love to be drawn into stories of mystery and imagination.

So horror at its best is a mature world of storytelling and our guests today have both been toiling in its graveyard for decades.
