Today I'm bringing you the story of Punyavati Sunkara who is one of the women who successfully

campaigned and protested for the prohibition of alcohol in the Indian state of Andra Pradesh in the the country side in some villages these men under the influence of liquor

they were committing sexual violence against their own family members.

The ban was seen as a major success for the Indian women's movement and led to major

social change in the state with a population in the 1990s of over 60 million people.

For Punyavati Sankara, who was Secretary of Andhra Pradesh's All India Women's Democratic Association,

it was a highlight of 40 years of campaigning for women and against alcohol or liquor.

Arak is one of the most potent types of alcohol consumed in India.

Arach means country liquor.

That means actually liquor but not like wine or whiskey, not like that made from rice it is a very poor quality that means that the

price of arach is relatively cheap even so Indian men who developed a

taste for this type of alcohol could spend a high proportion of the family income on it.
