During the Cold War race to space, the United States and the Soviet Union were engaged in an all-out competition to see who would get the first man into orbit and then to land on the moon.

The Soviet Union got to orbit first.

Yuri Gagarin circled Earth at a speed of 27,400 kilometers per hour with the flight lasting 108 minutes. He safely returned to Earth, ejecting from

his ship and parachuting to the ground. The lost cosmonaut conspiracy suggests that the Soviets actually

reached the cosmos prior to this,

but those earlier doomed missions resulted in fatalities and were swept under the rug.

Ooh, yes, it is all very secretive and, again, a big conspiracy theory that Soviet officials

took drastic measures to conceal the dark realities of their

Cold War space program, have killed and lost cosmonauts, all kinds of theories ranging from

espionage to coercion to things much, much worse.

And this was going to be the topic of our final episode today, but I'm sure as you've heard,

some things have changed.
