Summary

As a child, Lulu Miller had a beloved dog. But one day, the dog disappeared – and in all likelihood, it was probably eaten by coyotes. Since then, Lulu has been strangely fascinated by these crepuscular creatures. Now, she heads to Graceland Cemetery in Chicago at the crack of dawn – to marvel at the urban coyotes that make the cemetery their home, and to grapple with their longstanding bad reputations. Plus: You can check out the coyote photos of Robert Loerzel (Lulu’s coyote guide) on his Instagram. All week, we’re collaborating with the great podcast Terrestrials to tell stories about people, places, and animals with bad reputations – and the surprising truths behind them.

Well, maybe first I should just say, hi, nice to see you.

Hello, Dylan.

Hello, hello.

So great to see you.

We've been talking this whole week about this idea of bad reputations.

And coyotes have a bad reputation.

0:16.8

I mean, people think of them as either a nuisance or a menace. What is your opinion? Do you think coyotes deserve their reputation?

0:27.7

I will say this. I understand why they have it. And I actually understand it on a deep personal level. Okay, do we need to do any trigger warnings, pet death? Okay, so my dog, growing up, my dog,

his name was Charlie, who was a little terrier. He lived to be 13, but shortly after his 13th

birthday, he was outside one night and a pack of wild coyotes ate him. And I know this, because I was

there, I didn't see it, it was pitch dark, but I heard it,

0:57.3

which was awful. And then the next morning there was nothing. There was not a bone, not a scrap of

1:05.3

fur, not a collar, nothing. But the thing is the next morning, when we were all kind of sad, my mom was like, you know,

1:13.5

maybe Charlie wasn't eaten by the coyote pack. Maybe he went off and joined the coyote pack.

1:20.3

And that was this kind of... Oh, mom. I know. It was like absurd. We all knew it wasn't true,

1:26.0

but it did last as this very sweet image that

1:29.6

sometimes what I think about his sad end. Instead, I picture him like in the front leading

them around like this tiny chair. Running through the woods. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. What made you want to

1:39.5

like even engage with coyotes again? Very recently, I heard about a real dog in Las Vegas that actually did that, that ran away

1:49.3

and joined a coyote pack for real.

1:52.9

It was documented, it was observed, and it was living with them for almost a year, and it was

returned safely to its family, and I just was like, oh my gosh, this is a fairy tale that's true.
