Welcome to the backcountry hunting podcast. Today we're going to tackle the beast. We're going to talk about cartridges and bullets.

Now this is a topic that has fueled many a campfire discussion and will continue to do so for as long as hunters gather around campfires.

So why all the hullabaloo about cartridges and bullets for backcountry hunting?

Simply put it's because the backcountry tends to put greater demands on a hunting cartridge than your typical front country hunting distances can be long. Shop

presentations can be less than ideal and opportunities can be quite scarce.

So when that opportunity does arise, you don't want to be crippled by a cartridge that is a minimal

for that opportunity. You need something that no matter what the

angle or the presentation is you can ethically penetrate through heavy bone,

heavy muscle, and through the vitals. Now before we get any further I want to know that there's a difference

between cartridges and bullets. Like many guys I tend to throw around the term bullets pretty

casually. Hand me that box of bullets, please,

when you're at the range with your buddy or whatnot.

When in actuality, the bullet, technically speaking,

is the projectile, the portion that travels down the barrel

exits the muzzle and heads towards your target. The cartridge is the entire

assembly including the case, the propellant contained within, the primer and of course the projectile the bullet up front.

I'm going to do a two-part discussion here.

We're going to start part one is about cartridges, the launching pad, if you will.

Part two is going to be specifically bullets, the projectile, the part that exits the muzzle and hopefully goes and cleanly kills your game.

Just as a note between the two, the most important is the bullet. So I'm kind of looking forward to doing part
