Summary

Jonah’s sailed the seas and seen the world over, but everything always draws him back to good ol’ New York, New York. Still, although today’s Ruminant ends with a discussion of the Big Apple’s terrifying floods (which may or may not have dealt a blow to the local rodent population), it also covers the Supreme Court’s controversial abortion ruling, the pervasive myth that big corporations are right-wing, and “closet normals” in the GOP who pretend to hold crazy views. With shameless book-plugging, Jonah also digs into how the definitions of left and right in politics have changed over time. If you’re a loyal listener, stick around until the end for a proposition you won’t be able to refuse. Show Notes: - David French breaks down the Texas abortion ruling - Jonah’s previous ruminations on abortion - Virginia’s late-term abortion bill - Advisory Opinions takes a deep dive into abortion law - Matt Continetti on the politics of abortion - A disappointing August jobs report - Richard Holbrooke’s damning diary - The latest Dispatch Podcast on Afghanistan - The Dispatch’s Afghanistan editorial - The Remnant with Graeme Wood - “Come home. America” - Gabriel Kolko - The Big Ripoff, by Tim Carney - The pandemic’s effect on women in the workforce - Ron Johnson says the quiet part loud - Leatherhead’s revenge - Someone call the Shredder Learn more about your ad choices. I'm going to be a gentleman now.

Can I please have your attention?

Thank you, Jenga.

Greetings, dear listeners. This is Jonah Goldberg, host of the Remnant Podcast, brought to you by the Dispatch and Dispatch Media.

0:35.0

I think we've been kicking it all. All cylinders this week. David French has a fantastic piece in his four members only.

0:45.0

Newsletter from yesterday explaining this Supreme Court stuff in Texas, this Roe v Wade being overruled in hysteria.

0:55.0

That alone, I think is probably worth the price of the subscription for a month.

1:01.0

And you should subscribe for all sorts of other reasons, including my own meager contributions.

1:07.0

So if you can become a member, that would be wonderful. And let's get started with the talking stuff with words.

1:19.0

Why do we start with the Texas thing?

1:25.0

So as listeners, I think no, I'm okay. I think Roe v Wade should be overturned. I'm okay with various states having the power to regulate abortion in various ways.

1:38.0

I think it would be better for America if we had sent the abortion issue to the states from the beginning.

1:47.0

And I'm not alone in this. This is like even as people love to point out, this was Ruth Bader Ginsburg's position.

1:55.0

That Roe was so sweeping and short-circated.

2:01.0

A natural democratic process that probably would not have ended up where rabid pro-choicers are.

2:10.0

Nor would it have ended up where rabid pro-lifers are. And I use rabid advisedly, I just mean like hardcore.

2:18.0

It probably would have ended up where the American people have consistently been for a very, very, very long time, which is that they are basically pro-choice up through like the first trimester.

2:32.0

And they become more and more supportive or tolerant of restrictions as you move later in a pregnancy.

2:40.0

This is how laws and a lot of countries work. It's how I think it's where we would have ended up for the most part with probably some outlier states.

2:50.0

There are lots of pro-lifers who think that would have been terrible and they would have made arguments to that effect. And again, I don't want to labor my own position on abortion, but I've talked about it a bunch of times.

3:02.0

But I think that one of the things as a matter of sort of political analysis from a 30,000 foot level that gets left out of that is that there would be a lot fewer hardcore, passionate pro-lifers in America had it not been for Roe.

3:17.0

Roe was a galvanizing thing that created and effect the pro-life movement.
