Bach was born on March 31, 1685, in Eisenach, Germany, into a family full of musicians. In fact, the name Bach was so well known

for music in his hometown that people often used it to mean musician. His father, Johann Ambrosius Bach,

was a town musician who taught young Johann to play the violin and the harpsichord. When Bach was

only 10 years old, both of his parents died,

and he went to live with his older brother, Johann Christoph, who was also an organist.

It was in his brother's home that Bach began to study music seriously.

As a boy, Bach showed extraordinary talent.

He had a beautiful singing voice, learned quickly, and could read and write music with ease.

He loved to take apart musical pieces and study how they worked.

He also liked to copy down the works of other composers so he could learn from them.

There's even a famous story about how, when his brother wouldn't let him see a special

book of music, Young Bach secretly copied it by Moonlight until he learned all the notes

by heart.

When he was a teenager, Bach earned a scholarship to study at a choir school in Lunaburg,
