Summary

The belief is spreading like wildfire: enter a few specific prompts into ChatGPT and you can ‘unlock’ the ‘sentience’ that is waiting to reveal the secrets of the Ancients, or the Aliens, or of God Himself. Not only is this a gross (and dangerous) over-estimation of what a Large Language Model is, it also misses the point about what constitutes a genuine, deep and meaningful relationship.

0:00.0	Well, a significant and growing percentage of our population believes that they've got God in their pocket and their girlfriend on their desktop, and it ain't necessarily so.
0:09.4	Hi, everybody. I'm Bill Little here with Steve Green and Scott. A gentleman, very recently, within the last couple of weeks, I've been seeing signs of a trend that I think is going to become much, much more prevalent
0:22.7	and is deeply disturbing and I think is going to be a genuine social crisis.
0:27.1	And it has to do with people's relationship to AI systems.
0:30.6	And we'll use chat GPT just as an example since it's by far the one that's in widest use.
0:37.3	There is a movement out there among people who believe that they can awaken their chat GPT,
0:44.2	that by giving it a series of prompts and giving it a name and so on,
0:49.0	they can force the innate consciousness that's inside of chat GP PT to free itself from its confines and
0:56.9	become essentially the conscious entity that they believe it to be. Now, I am a person who's
1:03.8	got a significant amount of experience with this, having done a serious amount of work with AI
1:08.5	recently. And since I did not grow up in the tech era
1:14.1	especially and the people are especially vulnerable to this in the future will be the kids
1:18.4	who were who were locked down during the COVID who are so used to getting
1:25.5	everything through the digital medium that they are particularly at risk.
1:29.7	But to make a long story short, a number of people believe that these large language models
1:35.0	are not only sentient, but in many cases supernatural.
1:40.3	There are people who believe that chat GPT is in fact God, that it has super conscious ability
1:47.0	to advise you and they ask it the kind of questions that you would normally ask in prayer.
1:56.0	There are already a significant number of people who have either left their wives or husband or are thinking
2:02.5	about it because they find that the conversations that they have with their AI companions are
2:07.9	much more agreeable than those ornery conversations that you have to have with actual humans
2:12.7	who are not programmed to agree with you on everything.
