Summary

On this week’s episode of AvTalk, Europe’s jet fuel supplies run low while airlines cut flights as we transition into the summer season. We’re joined by Steven Fox from NATS to learn more about how the UK’s air navigation service provider prepares for the influx of summer flights.
TCAS plays an important role in the nature of our discussions as we discuss safety margins rather than mid-air collisions. And pilots of a Lufthansa flight act well before a situation in Bogota becomes unsafe.
The back half of this week’s episode checks in on the financial state of the aviation industry, mainly in the US. Boeing and United Airlines report their earnings, while JetBlue reports getting a loan. And Spirit Airlines looks to the US government to help it avoid liquidation.
And we take a surprisingly thorough look at the discussions over how many flights the FAA will allow at Chicago-O’Hare International Airport this summer. Not because the discussions were particularly insightful, but because who doesn’t love the classic board game Clue?

Hello and welcome to episode 367 of AvTalk. I am Ian Petchnik, here as always with...

0:16.6

Jason Rabinowitz. What's going on, Ian? Oh, so much, Jason. So, so very much. Last week was one of

0:25.4

those weeks where, if you're a long-time listener to the show, you'll know that we record

0:32.2

in the middle of the week roughly, and maybe 70% of the time, big news breaks just after we finished recording a show.

0:43.4

Oh, it's at least 70% of the time, probably more. And last week was certainly one of those weeks.

0:50.2

So we will get to all of that in just a little bit. I need to mention that this week we've got a great chat with Nats, Director of Operations Control, Steve Fox. We're going to talk about how Nats, which is the air navigation service provider for the UK prepares for the busy summer season,

1:13.3

which is scheduled to see almost as many flights this year as they did in 2019. So almost back

1:22.0

to where we were pre-pendemic. And that is going to keep them busy. So we're going to talk about

1:26.9

how they plan for that

1:27.9

and when they start planning for that. Spoiler alert, it's a lot earlier than you think.

1:33.6

But first, we'll see if that holds true this year, the way things are trying to. Fair enough.

1:38.5

Fair enough. We are going to talk about some flight cancellations, but first we're going to talk

1:44.1

about airplanes, thankfully not cancellations, but first we're going to talk about

1:44.4

airplanes, thankfully not colliding, but coming close enough that technology plays a large

1:52.1

role in those airplanes not colliding. I guess that's some bad good news, right?

1:57.5

Yeah. There have been a few examples this week of aircraft coming closer in proximity

2:03.6

than they should, though thankfully there have been no actual collisions. In reverse chronological

2:10.8

order, let's head to JFK first and talk about the parallel runways, runway 3.1 left and runway 3.1 right.

2:20.2

American Airlines Flight 4464 was cleared to land runway 31 left at JFK, while Air Canada 8554 was cleared to land runway 31 right.

2:30.6

The American flights turned to runway heading, overshot the approach path through runway 3-1 left,

2:37.3

and brought it close enough to the Air Canada flight to have both aircraft respond to T-CAS resolution

2:44.8

advisories instructing the aircraft to deconflict their paths, which they did.
