Summary

On this week’s episode of AvTalk, we discuss two statistically improbable events — an airACT 747 veered off the runway and struck a vehicle before ending up in the sea and a United Airlines 737-8 MAX struck something at 36,000 feet. We walk through the most likely scenario at this point.
Lack of communication (literally) leads to a diversion in Omaha, the NTSB releases its preliminary report on the runway overrun in Roanoke, Boeing is moving up to production of 42 737s per month, and the US Senate advances a bill that would add requirements for ADS-B In usage and remove exemptions for most military flights.

Hello and welcome to episode 342 of AvTalk. I am Ian Petchnik, here as always with

0:15.7

Jason Rubinowitz. How's it going? Wait, this is the A340200 episode. This is the most underpowered episode

0:24.0

that we will ever have. In more way than one. Just wait till next week. We've got a good

0:30.6

jump coming. Jason, we record in the depths of business travel. And I want you to describe where you are

0:41.7

sitting today in order to make this episode happen. It seems like whenever I make my pilgrimage

0:47.0

to the corporate office in Dulles, it ends up being Wednesday is my busiest day where it's

0:51.0

hardest to get away. And today is actually our first day and are still

0:56.0

yet to be completed new corporate headquarters. So I am currently in an interior gymnastics room

1:03.4

inside the workout room, inside the lobby of the building, which our office is being built in. It is literally the only place

1:13.3

I could find that I had access to that could be quiet enough to record this podcast.

1:18.0

And for added authenticity, Jason is in fact wearing sweatbands. It's actually quite nice.

1:24.1

There are towels here and like it's nice and cold and you draw the lights.

1:28.4

Like, I've recorded this podcast in worse places than this. This is true. This is true. I think in

1:34.6

episode three, we actually had you crawl inside of an airplane. Ah, in Malta. That was fun, though.

1:40.3

So let's get to the news, because I know you have to get back to your day job.

1:45.5

I do. I'm here for actual reasons.

1:48.1

Actual reasons. On Sunday or early Monday morning local time, an Air Act 747400 veered off the runway in Hong Kong, struck a ground security vehicle that was stationed

2:06.1

along the northern perimeter road, pushed the vehicle into the bay, and followed it in.

2:13.9

Unfortunately, both occupants of that vehicle were killed.

2:19.9

The crew of the aircraft, all four crew members on board the cargo plane, escaped without injury.

2:27.1

This is just a bizarre one.

2:30.9

It's a wild story.
