Hello and welcome to episode 265 of Avtoc. I am Ian Petchenick here as always with

0:25.4

Jason Rabinowitz. No time for pleasantries today, Ian. We've got a lot to cover. Not a lot of time. Let's get to it. Well we've got a great show today. Jason and I are probably off on looking at the show notes, maybe we have two or three good rants in us,

0:30.8

and we also have a fantastic conversation with Scott Bateman who is currently

0:36.6

a pilot for a large UK airline but that's not what we're talking about with him.

0:41.7

He has written a new book called Hercules, first in

0:44.8

last out the story of an RF legend as a former Hercules captain he knows a bit about the aircraft.

0:50.7

So we're going to chat with him a little bit later in the show and stick around for

0:55.0

information on how you can win a copy of the book.

0:59.2

Hey, we don't have many giveaways, that's good. No, we don't, but we're going with a great book. I've read the book. It's fantastic. So we'll talk more about that later in the show. But we go back to Jason's backyard first to start the show and talk about another not so good situation this time at

not one, not two, not three, but four other aircraft crossing their runway as they were on the takeoff roll.

1:35.0

That's not good.

1:37.0

No, that's not good.

1:39.0

The way JFK works in many configurations, well, two configurations really. You have two parallel

1:45.1

runways, two two four and in this configuration they were operating I believe on

1:51.1

the fours. So you had aircraft that were coming in that were

1:55.8

landing parallel to aircraft that were taking off on the adjacent runway.

1:59.9

What happens when these aircraft land they make a left turn off the runway.

2:04.0

I'm sorry, I think this was actually on operating on the fours, but they make a left off the runway

2:08.8

and they stagger on different taxiways to cross the active departure runway. They'll often queue up and wait for kind of a break for the

2:17.4

departures and then air traffic controllers will clear a bunch of aircraft at the same time to cross the runway while a departure, if there's a line of departure,

2:25.9

departure will hold or if there's no aircraft waiting to go, that's great, but that doesn't usually
