Summary

Championship winners and cars with multiple victories on their CVs usually grab the limelight when it comes to the greatest cars in Formula 1 history. But there have been some fantastic machines that have narrowly missed out on ultimate glory.  We reckon they deserve recognition, too. So, in the latest of Autosport’s Top 10s, leading F1 journalist Maurice Hamilton joins host Kevin Turner to debate and discuss the 10 best F1 cars that never took a title. We’ve excluded the Lotus 78 because it played a part in Lotus’s title double in 1978, prior to the arrival of the 79 (much more so than the 312B3-74 did in 1975), as well as the 1991 Williams FW14 due to its similarity to the gizmo-laden B version that dominated in 1992. and worst, but mainly the best, of F1 history over the last 75 years. And we've got a different one. We've had tracks and teams. And this time we're going to focus on cars. And we're going to look at the top 10 F1 cars that didn't win a championship, either a constructor's title or a driver's title, which is, I think, quite an interesting way to look at it. We often focus on the greatest cars, don't me, the ones that win multiple championships and multiple races, but there are plenty of great designs that didn't quite get over the line for one reason or another. And to help me through my list is Maurice Hamilton, who has written a book. I'm going to get it out here. I can get the plug in early, Maurice, this one. Formula One cars, the greater F1 cars, is 90 and 50 to the present day. And the reason I'm interested about this one is that none of the cars on my list are in the book.

So this could be an interesting discussion.

1:35.3

So I mean the book, to be fair Morris, it includes a lot of championship winning cars.

1:40.3

That was your focus, wasn't it? I guess the great designs for the book.

1:43.3

Yeah, the basis for it was the car has to have won a Grand Prix, not necessarily a championship, but provided it's won a Grand Prix, and it's a significant car, it should be in there. So, for example, the March 701... That was one I was going to pick you up on. Yeah, I knew you would, is in there because it won't go on pre-

2:02.6

Okay, but the fact that it was there at all was a significant thing for me.

2:06.6

The fact that March actually existed is a significant thing.

2:10.6

Well, and supplied about four or five of them from nothing to five cars on the grid.

2:15.6

I mean, the whole story is absurd.

2:18.0

But anyway, yeah, that's why that's there.

2:19.4

But yeah, this is a very interesting topic, Kevin,

2:22.2

because there can only be one champion per year from 10, 11,
