| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the Dr. Berg's Healthy Keto and Interminute Fasting podcast, where Dr. Berg takes you on the journey for the truth about getting healthy and losing healthy weight. |
| 0:16.0 | I want to talk about autophagy and what will trigger autophagy more. |
| 0:28.1 | Exercise or fasting. For those of you that are not familiar with autophagy, |
| 0:33.8 | autophagy comes from the word auto, which means self, and phagy, which means eat. So, autophagy |
| 0:40.7 | is not a thing. It's a condition. And this condition is the recycling of old, worn-out cell parts, |
| 0:51.8 | proteins. And it's a condition that's very good for us because it's all about |
| 0:56.2 | anti-aging. And when we age, we have a deficiency of autophagy. So it's very important to know how to |
| 1:02.4 | trigger this condition. And also, autophagy is very deficient in chronic disease states. Okay, so what triggers autophagy? Well, it's the suppression of glucose |
| 1:14.1 | with the increase of ketones. And this is why fasting is probably the most potent thing to trigger |
| 1:21.9 | autophagy. But exercise can also trigger autophagy. Why? |
| 1:27.9 | Because it forces the body to use of glucose. |
| 1:31.1 | And it also increases insulin sensitivity. |
| 1:35.6 | Because when you exercise, you're actually lowering insulin. |
| 1:38.2 | When insulin becomes too high, it knocks you out of autophagy. |
| 1:43.3 | And so if you were to exercise, for example, and induce a nice spike in |
| 1:47.2 | autophagy, which can then last from hours to even days, it really all depends on how long you go |
| 1:53.4 | until you eat something. And this is why it's very beneficial to exercise while you're fasting, |
| 1:59.4 | because now you can get this compounding effect. And so this is why I have |
| 2:03.1 | to explain the concept and give you additional data because the atophagy that's created from exercise |
| 2:08.6 | really depends on the next time you eat. Now you might have a nice little acute spike, but it might only |
| 2:14.6 | last for an hour. As compared to fasting for 48 hours, you are getting |
| 2:18.6 | a massive amount of atophagy. Now, the type of exercise is very, very important as well. |
