Summary

There is a growing body of evidence that suggests a link between narcissistic abuse and various autoimmune disorders, such as fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and various inflammatory issues. Upon closer examination of the onset of these physical ailments, a correlation with the traumatic experiences of narcissistic abuse often arises. In this episode, I explore how our bodies utilize physical pain as a coping mechanism to divert our attention from the abuse we are enduring.

What you will learn in this episode:

  • Why our body uses pain as a protective mechanism
  • How emotional pain can translate into physical pain
  • Tips for reducing inflammation and alleviating the symptoms of autoimmune disorders

Additionally, I will share my personal experience with how Internal Family Systems (IFS) helped me understand that my mother's rheumatoid arthritis was likely a result of her own traumatic experiences. My ultimate goal of this episode is to empower you to identify the underlying causes of your pain so that you can begin to heal from within, rather than relying solely on medication or resigning yourself to a lifetime of suffering. It is my hope that this episode will serve as a helpful resource in this journey towards healing.

So this is something I have been wanting to talk about for a while and I've dipped into it on

other podcasts that I've done as well. And it really came about on the back of,

1:11.7

I was interviewed this week. It's not come out yet, but keep watching Glennon Doyle's

podcast. We can do hard things. And we spoke a little bit about pain as a protector part.

1:23.6

And it was something that I wanted to share with you because I know many people when they're

1:28.8

trying to heal from the trauma of narcissistic abuse will have some kind of pain, normally

manifesting in things like autoimmune disorders. So there are many, many people that I know

who have fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, or other forms of autoimmune disorders.

And when we start to look at pinpointing when they started, there often seems to be a definite

trauma element. Now, I'm not sitting here saying that every single person in the world who has an autoimmune

disorder has trauma. But there is definitely a growing body of evidence to suggest that autoimmune

disorders are really our bodies going inwards on ourselves. When we're producing a huge

amount of cortisol unnecessarily longer than we need to. This is producing inflammation

within the body leading to autoimmune disorders, particularly with autoimmune disorders like fibromyalgia,

where there's no definitive test for fibromyalgia. It's really a series of questions,
