| 0:00.0 | This is Science Friday. I'm Roxanne Camsey in for Ira Flato. |
| 0:04.7 | Later this hour, we'll talk to two autistic researchers adding their own lived experience and |
| 0:10.4 | expertise to the study of autism. And we'll dig into our history with parasites. This week, |
| 0:18.6 | air pollution regulators in California made a bold move to phase out sales of new gasoline-powered vehicles, with a complete ban on gas car sales by 2035. |
| 0:31.7 | Joining me now to talk about this and other science stories of the week is Sophie Bushwick, technology editor at Scientific American based in New York City. |
| 0:41.9 | Sophie, welcome back to Science Friday. Thanks for being here. Thank you. I'm excited to be here. |
| 0:47.5 | So let's talk first about this car decision. What exactly are these regulators in California banning? |
| 0:53.6 | So California regulators have said that by 2035, no gas powered cars can be sold. |
| 1:00.3 | So electric or hydrogen powered vehicles will be all of the new vehicles sold. |
| 1:05.4 | Used vehicles can still be there. |
| 1:07.6 | And the other interesting thing is that they're phasing them out. So by 2026, |
| 1:13.4 | already 35% of new passenger vehicles have to produce zero emissions. Wow. So it's not so much |
| 1:21.5 | about going cold turkey. Exactly. They're easing into it, but it is still a significant change. |
| 1:26.5 | And if other states follow them, |
| 1:28.6 | this could affect a third of all automobile sales in the U.S. And so to make this change, is there going to be a need for a new infrastructure, |
| 1:35.6 | new charging stations? What's needed to make this happen? Absolutely. So one of the things that |
| 1:42.0 | electric vehicles require are charging stations so they can go distances. And California is also making moves to put money towards establishing those. Another issue is that if you have a lot of electric cars charging up the grid, you'll need to make sure that there's enough electricity for them. So that will also have to be addressed by 2035. |
| 2:00.2 | Hmm. California is super trendy. |
| 2:02.7 | It's on trend. |
| 2:03.8 | What is the likelihood that other states will make the similar kind of move? |
| 2:07.7 | There's about 16 states that tend to follow California's lead when it comes to regulating |
| 2:12.5 | auto emissions. |
