Summary

On this week’s podcast, Rad interviews Kevin Maurer and Lucky Luckadoo. Kevin is an award-winning journalist and author of critically-acclaimed books, including No Easy Day, the inside story of the Bin Laden raid. John "Lucky" Luckadoo also joins today's show to share his experiences during WW2 and how he collaborated with Kevin to tell his story.

He shares how he was stationed in England and the virtually unheard-of feat of surviving 25 bombing runs in broad daylight without fighter escort. Lucky shares that they didn’t talk about the war, they just lived it.

He comments on the nature of war and how there is nothing to be learned in it. There are no victors, only victims. He says that finding the will to get in the cockpit again and again was a horrific responsibility, but he did it as it was his duty.

1:21.0

So I got there in January of 2003, and by March I was in Iraq with the 82nd, so since then I've been sort of chasing these military stores.

1:29.0

Okay, and then you've chased down Lucky. You've done one thing that a Messerschmitt could not do, and that was catch lucky.

1:37.0

She caught Lucky to tell his story in a book, huh? So Lucky, welcome to software radio.

1:45.0

Well, actually the connection between us was my phone out of the blue.

Kevin called me and said that he had heard some of my stories and wanted to read my book, and I said,

2:01.0

well, I don't have a book. Never had a book. And he said, well, certainly your story should be told.

2:08.0

And would you be willing to, or would you consider collaborating on a book with me?

2:14.0

And so I said, well, I don't know you, and you don't know me, and I don't know your writing style.

2:21.0

So what have you done? And he said, well, he written 10 books, and he'd be happy to show me, or send me copies, and let me see for myself.

2:32.0

If I thought we were compatible to work together to relate what I thought were stories about one of the most, if not the most notorious group in the 8th Air Force,

2:46.0

the bloody hundreds that I accidentally became a part of, and if he thought that was something that he would like to write about and convey it because I was not a writer, I was able to,

3:05.0

fairly well, maybe speak about my experiences, but writing them was something else for a narrative people to read and to document,

3:18.0

because I was certainly intrigued by the idea of having something in writing that could be referred to historically for future generations,

3:31.0

particularly my grandchildren and great grandchildren to read about what my experiences were.

And unfortunately, just as we reached agreement, COVID happened.
