The Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, was returned to power with his Labour Party

expanding its majority, despite opinion polls at the start of the year,

showing it trailing the Liberal National Coalition.

The Conservative opposition leader, Peter Dutton, who had been compared to Donald Trump,

lost the seat that he's held for more than two decades.

He said he accepted full responsibility for the defeat.
