Summary

Less than a week after the Liberals came from behind to win in Canada, Australia's governing Labor Party has won the election there. Is the Trump effect in play once more?

Also in the programme: Israel ramps up airstrikes on Syria, claiming to be defending the Druze minority; Poland boosts its defences in the face of the Russian threat; and we hear from an author shortlisted for the International Booker Prize – whose novel’s main character is based on her late sister.

Hello and welcome to NewsHour from the BBC World Service.

0:06.9

Coming to you live from our studio in central London, I'm Celia Hatton.

0:11.1

We begin today's program at an exciting moment after a hard-fought Australian election campaign,

0:18.7

Anthony Albanese's left-leaning governments staying on in power.

0:22.9

It's the end of a rollercoaster race. For months, we've seen Mr. Albanese battle for votes against

0:29.8

the leader of the opposition coalition, the arch-conservative Peter Dutton. Earlier this year,

I don't think that there's a wonderful, inspiring group of potential prime ministers in Australia at the moment.

1:15.2

I'm reasonably happy with the status quo as it is.

1:17.7

I'm not been at all impressed by Dutton and his performance in the elections.

1:21.5

I think Labour will get a majority, and I think Australians, because of the compulsory voting and because of that

1:29.2

tendency to vote towards the centre will mean that Dutton and his attempt to appeal to the

1:36.6

centre right and to further right by using these kind of Trumpian dog whistle policies is going to

1:42.3

fail. Well and now the polls...

1:47.0

The polls have closed,

1:54.1

and Anthony Albanese's Labor Party is staying on for a second term.
