Summary

These days the Australian Open sits alongside the other Grand Slam tournaments as one of the best and most prestigious tennis events in the world, but it wasn’t always that way. In this episode, we tell the story of its transformative move from Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club to Flinders Park in 1988.

Pat Cash, who lost back-to-back five-set finals in 1987 and 1988 talks us through it all, including what Kooyong was like as a venue, why his 1987 defeat to Stefan Edberg feels like the one that got away in his career, why a move to the new site was both necessary and a roaring success, the effect of the new surface known as Rebound Ace, and the epic back and forth he had with Mats Wilander in the classic 1988 final.

We also hear from Pam Shriver - who won the women’s doubles title with Martina Navratilova in both years - about her experience.

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments.

Where's day two of Australian Open Relive? So I'm not sure we can live up to day one because

I've not really been able to think about much else since we recorded that show about

0:31.8

a Von Gulligan-Caulay Catherine. She's almost maybe want to look up more stuff about her and

0:37.8

listening to people that have responded to that show and written to us. It feels that she's

0:44.8

really got under the skin of everybody who's remembered who, but particularly people that were

0:49.9

around at the time, which is, I suppose, kind of the whole point, really, isn't it?

0:55.8

Yeah, Pat Roberts is all of us, apparently.

1:01.8

I'm not sure she's listened yet. Oh, my mum tends to be a day behind with the podcasts.

1:08.8

All right, that's good. I drew attention to somebody that I know who I'm sure will be

1:14.1

interested in that show over in Australia. And he said, yeah, I'm a bit busy at the moment.

1:19.6

I'll probably get around to it about March, but I promise I will watch. I will listen to it.

1:26.0

But anyway, it was a pleasure to do it. And we have more for you today because we're fast-forwarding

1:34.6

a few years from Von Gulligan-Caulay's time at the top and her winning Australian Open titles in

1:42.6

the 70s. We're going through into the 80s in particular to concentrate on.

1:49.8

But really, the whole idea of this show is we wanted to cover the history of the tournament and

1:55.2

its movement from Cuyon to Flinders Park, now known as Melbourne Park, in the years 1987 and 1988.

2:04.3

We have spoken to Pat Cash. We've spoken to Pam Shriver, both of whom were very significant figures

2:10.0

at both of those tournaments. I don't really think I realized it when we first came up with the idea

2:15.6

to speak to them, Catherine, that they had both been in the finals of both tournaments. Pam
