Summary

Saturday was the quietest day of this Australian Open so far, in all senses of the word. The fans were sorely missed and there wasn’t quite the same amount of drama or fun as previous days. But it was still a Grand Slam day, meaning there was still plenty for us to discuss, including:

  • Silent stadia - pros and cons
  • Nadal makes progress; Will Fognini stop him?
  • Berrettini wins, but bigger battles await
  • Tsitsipas enjoys a quiet life
  • What happened to Daniil Medvedev?
  • Just how good is Casper Ruud?
  • Barty braced for deep run. Who can stop her?
  • 'Jen' Brady, perhaps
  • The curious case of Karolina Pliskova

The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. It is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments.

Well if yesterday was a banging night out that ended in A&E,

0:27.4

I think today, day six of the 2021 Australian Open, the first fully crowdless day, I think today

0:36.4

was the New Year's Eve House Party that you feel you have to go to because it's New Year's Eve.

0:42.7

So you show up, you do the rounds for a couple of hours and then you sneak off to a bedroom and

0:49.6

go to sleep. Or it's just the hangover the day after where you just sit there and just

0:56.9

drink cups of tea and not answer any calls. They hangover the day after the banging night out

1:03.3

at the end of the A&E. Yeah, well you just try to sort of pick up the pieces and clear at the mess.

1:08.2

Yes, okay. Well that maybe works better. And wait for your next party in a day's time.

1:15.3

It's the regroup day. It's fresh as week when you, when in my case, you have one big night out,

1:23.9

you think that's it and you can just have a normal week and then you find out you've got to do it

1:27.6

again the next night. But so what you do is you just insert little rest days. Yeah, I don't understand

1:33.1

human beings that enjoyed fresh as week. Genuinely look back and say, I enjoyed fresh as week.

1:40.4

I don't understand that on a human level. So they walk among us, Catherine.

1:48.1

Apparently so. It's not that I didn't enjoy today. I just, I don't know. It just, I mean there were no crowds.

2:01.2

We knew there were going to be no crowds. That that was a shame. How much was the fact that there

2:08.8

were no crowds of contributing factor to the fact that today was a bit of a damp script? I mean,

2:14.8

this has been the damp script half of proceedings. Yeah. We've made no effort to conceal that on the

2:23.6

podcast. You know, there have been highlights. We'll, we'll big those up as best we can on today's

2:29.3

pod. But how much was it the crowd, David? I think it was definitely part of it in that, you know,
