| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me, Simon Calder. It's Thursday the 7th of |
| 0:06.1 | August and for the last 24 hours has been an awful lot of talk about possible lottery systems to |
| 0:13.9 | avoid over tourism. This all came about because of some comments by Glenn Fogle, the chief executive of booking.com, |
| 0:23.0 | who said that the key to solving over tourism could be a, quote, a combination of higher cost and |
| 0:31.7 | lottery. He basically said, and this was in comments to the BBC's Wake Up to Money programme, |
| 0:38.7 | even though you may not be wealthy, you should still get a chance to visit some of those |
| 0:43.2 | beautiful and great places in the world. Now there are some wonderful parts of Europe which have |
| 0:49.7 | serious problems with too many visitors. For instance, the old town of Dubrovnik has a spectacular |
| 0:55.7 | location on the edge of the Adriatic. You've got churches and cottages lining the cobbled streets |
| 1:03.2 | and some heavenly stairways all wrapped in ancient walls. Trouble is, on any day in summer, |
| 1:10.7 | the whole place is overrun with tourists. |
| 1:13.8 | Some of them are just attracted by the sheer good looks of the place. Others, it's the Game of |
| 1:19.4 | Thrones connection, and many, well, they're simply dropped off for the day by cruise ships |
| 1:24.3 | and are following or adding to the crowd. |
| 1:28.2 | Would a lottery help? |
| 1:29.8 | Well, I've been looking at the possible issues that it would raise. |
| 1:34.6 | You could, of course, simply put up prices. |
| 1:37.3 | Venice already has a visitor livery on certain days. |
| 1:40.6 | Amsterdam are raising accommodation taxes. |
| 1:43.2 | And if you take Edinburgh, which at this time of year is |
| 1:46.5 | hosting the festival and the fringe, hotel rates should be enough to deter anywhere. But that, of course, |
| 1:53.0 | excludes less wealthy travellers from iconic locations and many people believe that's unfair. |
