Summary

As you'll see in this week's episode, we're warming to two themes this season: urine, and the far-right. Timo Lochocki (@TLochocki), an expert on populism in Europe, is on the line from Berlin to talk about why we SHOULDN'T talk about Steve Bannon's new venture on this side of the Atlantic. On a brighter note, Adrian Murphy's here to talk about Europeana, a lovely EU culture project that is currently collecting personal stories about migrating around the continent. Check it out at https://www.europeana.eu. Also: good times for cash-strapped Berlin parents, bad times for Shakespearean amateur voiceover artists, and a disaster averted in Katy's hometown. This is the first ever episode of this

podcast recorded off the continent, or like 50% at least. On one end of the Skype call is my

0:27.9

charming co-host, Dominic Kramer, in Amsterdam as usual. But on this end, it's Katie, usually in Paris,

but today I find myself unexpectedly in South Africa.

0:38.2

What?

Should we cancel the episode?

Because I feel like it shouldn't be called the Europeans.

Now you're not in Europe.

The Europeans and Africans.

Things have taken a very unexpected turn this week.

0:48.6

I'm in Johannesburg.

0:50.5

I got a cool last Wednesday saying,

0:53.0

can you fly out tonight and help the office there for a bit?

0:58.7

They're covering the Zimbabwe elections and it's a massive story and you've got 15 minutes to pack a suitcase, go.

1:04.1

So that's where I am. It's been a really interesting experience covering it. It's the first elections after Robert Mugabe got kicked out obviously, so it does feel quite historic.

1:08.5

But I haven't really seen anything of Johannesburg. I've been

1:11.5

literally sleeping here in the office and just bashing out, breaking news all the time. But yeah,

1:17.0

it's really cool to be here. And the nice thing is, it's way less hot here than it is in Europe

1:21.8

because of the heat wave, because it's spring here in Africa. That's all I needed to do to escape the

1:26.2

heat wave. Who knew it? Go to Africa.

1:28.1

It's not spring in the whole of Africa though, Katie, is it?
