Good morning, everyone. I'm Playbook co-author, Ryan Lizza. It's Friday, August 23rd.

The balloons have dropped, and Kamala Harris is officially the Democratic nominee for president.

Joining me in the CNN Politico Grill to break down Harris' big speech and to talk about what's next in this presidential campaign are my playbook co-authors, Eugene Daniels, and Rachel Bade. Hello. We're running off no sleep. It's going to be fine. Let's start with you, Eugene. About an hour or two after the speech. What did you think? Big picture. What did she

accomplished politically tonight? Yeah. I thought it was an effective speech. I was just talking to

0:42.0

John Harris, our global editor-in-chief, and he said the same thing. So I felt like I was right,

0:45.8

so that's a good thing. The things that she needed to do was introduce herself to the American

0:52.1

people. And the way that you can do that is either be tough and talk about your policies

0:55.7

or you talk about who you are and how that ties into the kind of vision you have

1:01.0

and how you're going to operate as a human being as president.

1:03.4

I thought she did that, right?

1:04.3

She talked about how important her mother is to her.

1:08.0

She talked about her father.

1:09.4

She talked about being a middle class kid,

1:12.0

how they lived within their means. It's a way to talk about being middle class and how most

1:18.1

voters feel about it, right? To say, like, we were just like you. I understand what you're

1:23.4

going through. But then she contrasts it with Donald Trump again and again. And again, I think the interesting thing about the way that she does it as opposed to how President Biden was doing and how Democrats were doing it when he was at the top of the ticket is that she said, she's like, he's on serious, right? Which is a completely different way than saying like, he's a danger to to democracy it's all going to burn down right

1:44.6

people said that this week right you have the january sixth day kind of um but she said he's

1:49.8

unserious and if he's back it will be serious consequences for the country that's good line right

1:54.1

like it's a different way to talk about it and kind of diminishes him a little bit i think

1:58.8

if that's something that they're trying to do. Rachel, what struck you?

2:02.0

Yeah, I mean, I thought the best parts of the speech was when she was talking about Trump. I mean, we've been hearing people say, you know, she's a prosecutor. She can prosecute the case against Trump. I've kind of rolled my eyes at that. But, like, actually, you could see it tonight. And, you know, Tim Walls is so effective when he's talking about, as you mentioned,
