In today's travel podcast, I look back at stories I wrote over this corresponding weekend over the past few years and let me tell you, things could be worse. Much worse.

Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me, Simon Calder. It's Thursday the 10th of August.

0:11.6

And there's all sorts of stuff happening. I've been in touch with one of the passengers who just got back to London Heathrow.

0:20.7

There's a plane load of people, many of whom

0:22.5

are three days late, having been caught up in all kinds of kerfuffle, including the flight to nowhere

0:30.4

that took place on Sunday night from Johannesburg to London Heathrow. The sudden closure of Niger's airspace meant that the

1:39.6

2021 and 2022. For the corresponding day, either side of today, I have been looking back just to

1:49.9

work out just how bad things were. And here's the headlines of the stories that I wrote.

1:56.7

UK will not hesitate to add France to quarantine list.

2:01.6

That was the assertion from, well, the then-Chancellor, Rishi Sunak.

2:06.6

He was saying, oh no, we've got to crack down on all of this.

2:10.6

And so if you're foolish enough to go to holiday to France, then, well, you know what to expect.

2:17.8

And soon enough, it was made one of those places where if you came back, you'd spend

2:23.1

14 days in self-isolation.
