Now let's go back to Canaan, New Hampshire, on August 10th, 1835.

A large group of men paraded toward the school with complete confidence.

The law was on their side.

They'd rallied officials a month before at the town meeting

to declare Noyce Academy a nuisance. Now it was time to take down the school once and for all.

To these people, the so-called nuisance of Noyce Academy was that the institution was integrated and co-educational.

Young men and women, black and white, all attended class together.

And the force that gathered to rip the academy from its foundations looked less like a

noble force of justice and more like an angry mob.
