Summary

Zach Montellaro, a POLITICO campaigns reporter and expert in (among other things) redistricting, writes in with a special dispatch today: Thursday brought the Census Bureau’s long-delayed release of redistricting data — the granular demographic data that mapmakers across the country will use to redraw political boundaries for the next decade. And while it’ll take some more number-crunching before data is ready for prime time, we already have some big takeaways: 1) The country is more diverse. 2) America is more urban. 3) We’re getting older. Raghu Manavalan is the host of POLITICO's Playbook.Jenny Ament is the senior producer for POLITICO Audio. Irene Noguchi is the executive producer of POLITICO Audio.

of Americans who identified as multiracial, little over 33 million Americans, that's up from

0:53.4

9 million back in 2010.

Metro areas grew by 9% over the last decade, even as more than half of counties saw their populations shrink.

1:10.0

New York City remains the country's largest city, even though everybody who left New York

1:14.2

was legally obligated to write a think piece about it.

1:17.5

Takeaway number three, we're getting older.

1:19.7

The country grew over the last decade, but at a slower rate than in decades passed.

1:23.7

And we're getting older as a result.

1:25.3

Almost 78% of the country is at least 18 years old.

1:29.1

There's 10% more adults this decade than the last decade, and there's a 1.4% decrease in the number of children.
