The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Episode 23 Aufheben is a German word that, in Critical Theory, means to "abolish" or to "negate" in the way that Critical Theorists do. It's a somewhat complicated term in that it means both to abolish and to keep or to keep safe, and the Critical Theory use taps into the so-called dialectical process to attempt to use aufheben to tear apart and, as the Marxists translated it, "sublate" whatever cultural artifact they are targeting onto a "higher" level of understanding, namely the one that empowers Critical Theorists and induces misery in everyone else. This process was widely pushed by the Critical Theorists of the Frankfurt School under a doctrine of Aufheben der Kultur, abolishment of culture, and it continues in the Woke movement today. One of the latest big targets of Aufheben der Kultur is Dr. Seuss and his wide body of popular children's literature. Why? Because of its success. Seuss becomes a cultural anchor point for hundreds of millions of children and adults, and by tainting Seuss, his legacy, and your own memories of him with accusations of racism and "harm," they can abolish that shared cultural anchor and make more room to advance their own agenda, in which every text is "decolonized" and geared to indoctrinate you and your children into Critical Theory, especially Critical Race Theory. 0:24.4	I am James Lindsay and today we're going to talk about the cancellation of Dr.
0:28.8	Seuss. I guess he technically hasn't been cancelled but for all intents and purposes he has,
0:35.2	we'll talk about that, talk about how it goes. The story is that six Dr. Seuss books will no longer
0:40.4	be published over so-called, quote, hurtful and wrong imagery. We have in the news today that Biden
0:48.0	removes the mention of Dr. Seuss from Read Across America Day. This is the direct result of
0:53.8	activism that targeted this and actually want to make it very clear that this is a much bigger
1:02.8	circumstance. I want to actually dive into the literature and show you what's going on.
1:07.6	With this is a bigger, this is a part, a small part of a bigger project, both against
1:16.0	Seuss himself and what's going on more broadly with the woke movement. This isn't a one-off or
1:22.0	some kind of a, you know, just little backwater of the culture war. In some sense it's small
1:30.0	but it really is indicative and it's not totally clear that the actual authors of the relevant
1:34.8	paper behind this cancellation, partial cancellation of Seuss which is actually a total tainting of Seuss
1:41.9	as we'll discuss. It's not clear that they understand what they're participating in but what
1:47.2	they're participating in is a very broad project that the entire woke movement drives. Their moral
1:52.4	impetus is to drive this project and that project is, or phrase in the original German alphabet
1:58.0	or culture which means the negation or abolishment of culture. It is what might have been called
2:04.7	cultural Marxism or cultural Bolshevism before that. The idea being that we're now going to use
2:10.6	Marxian conflict theory in the Bolshevists methods against cultural artifacts to tear down cultural
2:17.6	hegemony and replace it. So those of you who listened to my podcast on Antonio Gramsci and
2:23.2	cultural Marxism will know that Gramsci was particularly instrumental in changing the target
