Their rest came in bursts, in a chair for a few moments, leaning upon their arms on the table

For that was when the sounds of the sky would come, the growl of engines among the clouds,

British or German, friend or enemy, life or death. In the distance or sometimes nearer, a soft rumble as though a truck had passed nearby,

and then the muted screams of voices carried upon the wind.
