So let's jump straight in.

0:28.2

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder

0:34.5

with the core features of inattention, meaning difficulty maintaining attention,

0:41.2

hyperactivity, meaning excessive energy and activity, and impulsivity, meaning difficulty controlling

0:49.7

impulses. ADHD is thought to result from a combination of factors, including genetic factors

0:57.0

and their significant heritability, meaning that if a parent is affected, a child is more likely to

1:03.3

be affected, pregnancy-related factors, for example, maternal smoking, premature birth and low birth weight, and environmental factors.

1:15.3

The symptoms of ADHD start in childhood and should be consistent across multiple settings.

1:29.9

suggest an environmental effect rather than an underlying diagnosis.

1:35.8

1:42.6

behaviour. When many of these features are present and are

1:46.7

adversely affecting the person, then ADHD may be considered. Symptoms include a short attention

1:54.6

span, being easily distracted, quickly moving from one activity to another, quickly losing interest in a task,

2:04.7

an inability to persist with and complete tasks, constantly moving or fidgeting,

2:12.6

impulsive behavior, and difficulty managing time. Let's talk about management. A specialist will make the

2:21.1

diagnosis after a detailed assessment. Management strategies for parents include a positive

2:28.0

approach to parenting, structured routines, clear boundaries and plenty of physical activity.

2:37.0

Medication is an option for moderate to severe ADHD.
