Summary

Back after a long flight and little sleep to dive deeper – and more rationally – into what went wrong for LSU against UCLA and how to start fixing it against McNeese State. Hester has film observations, and Cody has some numbers, so we talk yards before contact, deep passing, pressure, variation in the running game, and the need for juice.

Plus, as always, your questions.

Hey Fighters, All right, welcome back to another edition of Hey Fightin' Podcast.

0:18.1

As always, Cody Worship, I'm joined in studio by Jacob Hester. Jacob, how was your recovery from, last time we talked, we were sitting,

0:26.8

like I said, outside of the Rose Bowl. It was a difficult two-hour window there, not just because

0:35.3

of the loss, of course, but buses took a couple hours to get

0:39.0

going. Right. The buses got there. The plane took off. We landed about 7.7.30 a.m.

0:45.6

On Sunday. So how have you adjusted physically to the, not just the jet lag, but just, you know,

0:51.4

the fact that, like, we had to sleep on a plane? Yeah, it was a very surreal podcast recording and the fact that we were sitting on a bench right in front of the entrance of the Rose Bowl, right by Jackie Robinson statue, and we were just sitting there talking about a game that we didn't really have a lot of good things to say about. Yeah. And then you're right. Like, you try to sleep on a plane, you land, and you get back to your house.

1:11.5

And it's like 7.30. And the kids are like, hey, hadn't seen you in a couple days. And you're like, I'm so rested. Let's talk. Let's have some fun. Let's throw the football. And then, of course, you're still angry from the game on Saturday. So, but you know what? Got to cut it. 24 hour rule.

1:28.6

It might have lingered on a little bit longer

1:30.4

because I'm getting a little bit older, but we're here now. And I've watched the tape probably three times. So, yeah, I had that feeling as I watched it as well. So here's what we're going to do today. We're going to look back at the game. This is going to be the standard format for the midweek show.

1:46.1

This is just how it's going to be.

1:47.2

We're going to look back at the game that was.

1:48.5

We're going to look ahead to the game that will be.

1:50.4

And then we're going to take some questions as well. And maybe we'll mix in some interviews as necessary. I may, I'm working on something for this week that I may be able to get up in time.

1:57.4

If not, just pretend I never said this sentence.

1:59.9

Before we get to that, I do, look, it's really hard for us in particular to talk about a game after a loss because

2:06.2

you played for LSU. I work for LSU. We're just not going to be the place that comes in and

2:11.2

the world is burning and fire everybody. It's just not going to be our niche. There's some people,

2:15.6

that's their niche. Great. You can go to them for that. We're going to try to be a little more cerebral. And to borrow a quote from Jacoby Stevens, attack the problems and not the people. So we're going to try to problem solve. That's what our goal is going to be after a loss. After a win, we're going to celebrate. We're going to gloat. We're going to point out all the great things. Still address some of the problems that are there. But really, the tone that I want to strike, I hope we got it right after the game, I don't know if we did or not, mostly because of a combination of like a million things, fatigue, frustration, logistical confusion. Hopefully we got that tone right, but certainly we're going to try for that today today and we're going to do our best. So I want to start by looking back at the game that was. And the last thing we said on the hurry up was you were going to go back and watch the film. As you said, you watched three times. I was going to go back and look at numbers. Now, I do have a little bit of good news. And I shared this with you on the podcast. I went back and looked at my numbers. I used pro football focus. I actually have access to film this year on pro football focus, which has never happened before. So I didn't watch the game start to finish. I went in and watched a lot of specific plays specific to the stats that I was looking up. And I have some stats I want to go over specifically some line of scrimmage stats,

3:24.4

because as you remember I said before the game, I think it's going to be a line of scrimmage game. It was. And some of the numbers really revealed that. And then I have a couple other just more advanced things that I want to look at in particular. But I want to start with you and what you saw on film. And I know you've talked about it for two days and off the bench now, but when you go back and

3:41.1

you look at the film, was it worse than you thought? Was it better than you thought? Was it about what

3:46.2

you expected it to be? It's about what I expected it to be because, you know, calling the game on the
