Summary

If the pod team could have chosen the semi-final line-up at the start of the tournament, it’s likely these four names would have featured.

But who will come out on top? After much deliberation, Catherine Whitaker, David Law and Matt Roberts make their picks. They also cover some important press conferences involving Djokovic and Alexander Zverev, relate some weird, wonderful, heartbreaking and downright awkward doubles news, and receive and react to a tweet from Pam Shriver.

The Tennis Podcast is produced weekly year-round, and daily during the Grand Slam tournaments. It is crowdfunded by listeners each December.

0:12.0

Well, thank you so much, Andy, for introducing this edition of the tennis podcast, one of our kickstarter backers who has been supporting us all year long. And here we are, finally, through the group stages of the ATP finals.

0:37.0

Quite, it feels like it's taken a while to get to that point, doesn't it? Matt Roberts is here, Catherine Whittaker's here. Catherine, you've had a bit of a day.

0:44.0

It's been a bit of a marathon and lots of weird stuff has gone on. But here we are approaching 11 o'clock at night and we finally have semi-finals to look forward to official.

0:59.0

Yes, I thought the biggest problem with today was it was going to be very, very boring. And it definitely wasn't that.

1:07.0

No.

1:10.0

It started with a COVID test.

1:13.0

Yes. Today started with a COVID test, although due to some confusion over exactly what time I was booked for my COVID test and whether I could go early or had to go my time slot, I actually went to her and make up first.

1:25.0

And lovely Sarah and Sophie made me look and feel lovely. And then I was reliably informed that I was the most glamorous looking person ever to take a COVID test.

1:40.0

By whom?

1:42.0

By the COVID test.

1:45.0

So that was that was my badge of honor for the day. And then whereas last time I got my results through around about hoppers 12 today, I had to wait till well past 4 p.m.

1:58.0

For my negative result, hooray, I will accept any and all congratulations.

2:05.0

But when it did come, I received it three times. I received three text messages and three emails confirming that I had tested negative for COVID-19.

2:15.0

Maybe it's best to be sure.

2:18.0

I wonder how many messages they send people who are positive because they really need to know.

2:27.0

She's not answering. I shouldn't laugh.

2:33.0

You got to laugh a bit.

2:36.0

So what made the day weird?

2:39.0

Because if we go through it, the afternoon was where singles wise, the action was, wasn't it?

2:45.0

In terms of the things that mattered. But there was a lot more to the day than that.
