Summary

Atomic chemistry is a core component of the MCAT, essential for understanding molecular behavior and periodic trends.

In this episode, host Sam Smith explores key concepts in atomic chemistry, including the intricacies of quantum theory, hybridization, and molecular geometry. You'll gain insights into electron configuration, periodic trends, and the role of quantum numbers in describing electrons. Sam also discusses the significance of nuclear decay, from alpha to beta and gamma decay, and how it impacts atomic structure.

0:30.1

Hello, I'm Sam Smith.

0:32.3

This podcast is going to talk about kind of five or six main topics within atomic chemistry.

0:38.7

The first is going to be hybridization along with molecular geometry.

0:43.2

I'll talk a bit about quantum numbers and quantum theory and then go into electron

0:47.6

configuration periodic trends.

0:50.3

And lastly, I will talk about atomic decay or nuclear decay.

0:54.6

And, you know, out of these topics, I would say the most important of these are the one that I see most is probably decay.

1:01.6

You see decay a lot.

1:02.6

You'll always get a hybridization question probably somewhere on the MCAT.

1:06.6

And this podcast will really cover just the physics chem section of the MCAT.

1:12.6

So it's just going to cover about one out of the four sections.

1:15.9

Again, this is on atomic chemistry, and I hope it helps.

1:25.2

All right, so I want to begin this lecture by talking about atomic orbitals.

1:30.3

And these are somewhat confusing.

1:32.2

You know, if you had a similar introchem classes, I did, you got taught that atomic orbitals

1:38.5

are these orbitals that electrons occupy and they're kind of like planetary orbits and that these electrons

1:46.5

orbit around the nucleus the further out from the nucleus you get corresponds to higher energy electrons
