Summary

At least 24 people have died in the wildfires that have ravaged Los Angeles County, and officials are warning that the danger is not over yet. Wind speeds are expected to strengthen tonight into Wednesday. The National Weather Service has issued an expanded red flag warning for Southern California, which could see winds up to 70mph, and has told residents the “setup is about as bad as it gets.” Anderson and his team spent the day with fire crews racing the coming winds as they work to keep hotspots from reigniting. A resident who lost his home in the Palisades Fire shares how the community is coming together to help one another. Plus, CNN's Gary Tuchman sees the damage done to a Pacific Palisades home, and it's deeply personal.  Learn more about your ad choices. And good evening, thanks for joining us. We're coming to you from a staging ground in the Pacific Palisades,

0:07.6

where fire crews, law enforcement and personnel have been using as a base of operations for the battle that is underway,

0:15.6

the race against the clock and against the potential wind that is expected to pick up tomorrow.

We have been seeing, we've been out there in the hills or in the Pacific Palisades today,

0:28.6

seeing about 5,300 fire crews, firefighters up and down these mountainsides, putting as much water, putting as much fire retardant down

0:39.7

as they possibly can, clearing as much brush as they possibly can, in anticipation of these

0:45.1

winds tomorrow. I want to show you the map, the wind map, the weather service has said the

0:51.9

potential is about as bad as it gets. The areas in purple,

0:56.5

um, which stretch now from east of Pasadena, all the way west and north through the San

1:01.7

Fernando Valley into neighboring Ventura County, nearly as far north as the resort town of

1:06.8

Ohio. The purple on the map, they say, could experience wind gusts up to 70 miles an hour.

1:13.6

Now, if that is the case, if that actually happens, and we'll see how long those wind gusts,

1:18.6

if they do happen, may be, but that would make it very difficult to get aircraft in the air

1:23.6

to put water down. And that wind could pick up these hidden hot spots underneath the ground,

1:32.6

just below the surface of the ground. And I want to show you exactly what we are talking about

1:37.4

with these hidden hotspots. I spent the day just driving around in this area here in the Pacific

1:43.8

Palisades.

1:45.0

And this is what we came upon.

1:47.0

I want to show you in particular one area that we were in,

1:53.0

watching about 30 firefighters go up and down these mountain sides,

1:58.0

looking for these hidden hotspots. Take a look. The battle to save

homes in Mandeville Canyon in Brentwood Heights has been intense. On Saturday, one home in
