In today's episode, you'll hear from the historian and author, Adrian Tinaswood,

whose recent book, Behind the Throne, explores the domestic world that supported British monarchs over the centuries.

He spoke to our section editor, Ellie Cawthorne.

So, Adrian, what made you want to delve into the private lives of Britain's monarchs?

That's a tough one. That's a tough one. I wrote a book a couple of years ago called The Long Weekend, which was about life in the country house between the wars.

And I wrote a chapter in that about the royal family's country houses, about how George V and George the Sixth lived at Sandringham and how the the royal offspring lived at

Barmwell and Fort Belvedere and when I was doing that I started to wonder exactly how

those houses functioned and how they were different how the social structures were different from

the traditional sort of aristocracy and the more I thought about it, the more intrigued I got.

I mean, I, years ago, I used to work with the Heritage Lottery Fund.
