This is the Kator Daily Podcast for Wednesday, May 29th, 2024. I'm Caleb Brown.

It's often hard to tell exactly when protectionism is driven by legitimate national

0:14.4

security concerns and when is driven by more parochial financial and political

0:19.0

interests. I sat down with Cato adjunct scholar Will Duffield to discuss the fight over drones and the

0:25.0

congressional effort to essentially keep certain Chinese-made drones out of the hands of Americans.

0:37.0

What are, at least among members of Congress, what are the concerns about drones, particularly when it comes to where they're probably going to be produced, China.

1:45.3

Countering CCP Drone's Act and it would in a sort of roundabout way prohibit the

1:51.0

use of all DJI drones in America.

1:54.0

DJI drones explain that.

1:56.0

So DJI is a Chinese-based company that's really the most successful small quadcopter manufacturer.

2:07.0

You see DJI drones everywhere from commercial uses to everyman hobbyists,

2:15.3

people tinkering, Instagram stars,

2:18.3

photographing themselves on the beach,

2:20.2

the standard quadcopter you imagine
