What's up epic gardeners today? We are going to talk about asparagus, everything you need to know, to grow asparagus, which is a great vegetable, an absolutely delicious vegetable one that I've really come around to I think maybe in my adult life in the past I used to sit at the kitchen table until my mom put me on time out because I didn't want to eat it but these days I really love asparagus and I really like to grow it as well.

The thing about asparagus though is it takes a lot of patience to grow asparagus, but once you learn how,

it is very satisfying and it's one of the first crops to come to harvest in the springtime

So let's talk about it. Well the first thing we're going to talk about is

Which asparagus variety should you plan.

So it's a mono-Eshis plant, which means that a plant is either male or the plant is female.

Male plants tend to provide better spear production than female plants, so a lot of seed providers are going to sell you all male plants.

Older Airm varieties, they are still a mix of male and female plants.

So if you want to of male and female plants.

So if you want to select for all male plants,

one thing you can do is look at your asparagus plants

with a magnifying glass once the flowers appear.

So if you're saving seed, this is a little tip.

Female plants are going to have pistols with three lobes.

Males will be larger and longer than females.

And what you can do then is pull out all of the female plants

and then transplant the males to your permanent bed next spring.

That is a really good tip.

Now I'm going to run through just a couple varieties, some of my favorites.

Any of the Jersey variety, so Jersey Giant, Jersey Knight, or Jersey Supreme.
