The very name conjured up images of Inca's, the Andes and beautiful roads, of squat flamboyantly dressed indigenous Indians, of Spanish conquistadors and their hunt for gold, of

Cusco, the Shining Path Bandits, and Desert Mummies.

Fine. If Bolivia wasn't for us this time, then Peru sounded like a prize alternative.

In fact, with its amazingly diverse landscape and well-documented historical past, it didn't feel like second choice at all.

Peru is a pearl among the jewels in the South American crown, and if we were being guided this way,
