| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the Jill on Money Show. |
| 0:05.5 | It's Saturday, July 27th. |
| 0:07.8 | And this weekend, I have a treat for you. |
| 0:10.7 | You know how we answer questions every day on this program? |
| 0:13.9 | Sometimes I go on other programs and do it. |
| 0:16.3 | And I'm sort of like the color commentary, not so much the brain. |
| 0:19.7 | And I was able to do that with my friends |
| 0:21.2 | over at the compound. Ben Carlson, who is the director of institutional asset management at |
| 0:26.5 | Riddholz wealth. He and Duncan Hill, who's the creative director at Riddholt's wealth, |
| 0:31.4 | they co-host a program called Ask the Compound. What's so cool is because Ben is a CFA, a chartered financial analyst. He does all this |
| 0:40.4 | research on all the questions and he puts up cool charts and graphs. So today and tomorrow, we're |
| 0:45.1 | going to air the episode of Ask the Compound, where I was the guest. And today we're talking about |
| 0:51.2 | something called the 4% rule. Listen, I'm sure there are some people who actually follow the 4% rule religiously, but certainly not as many people as financial researchers would assume. So what do you think? This is such a squishy question. It's a very important one for people, like how much do I actually need to retire? But one that I think a lot of people don't actually know until they get to the day where they say, |
| 1:11.0 | I'm fine. I can do it. So how do you think through this framework? I'm old. And so I grew up |
| 1:17.6 | with the 4% rule, sort of drilled into me. And I think, you know, it's weird because we've |
| 1:24.2 | just gone through this inflationary spike. So it used to be when I would say to people |
| 1:27.8 | about like, you know, 4%, it sounds great, but like what if things go wrong? What if there's like |
| 1:35.1 | more inflation than you would expect or your assets don't perform as you would expect? |
| 1:41.1 | Or I don't know, just something weird happens. And they'd look at you like you're crazy. |
| 1:45.0 | So now, at least we have the experience of like, yes, we can have inflation and it can happen |
| 1:49.9 | at the wrong time for people. You know, I guess in my experience, like when I was an advisor |
| 1:55.8 | a million years ago, people wanted some thumbnail guidance, right? And I think that that's what the 4% rule is meant to do, which is just give me some framework so I don't blow through all my money. |
