One of the most insightful aspects of George Orwell's 1984, which should be thoroughly studied and read by all patriotic citizens, is this idea that an illegitimate regime needs to be perpetually at war. You need an enemy. And after 9-11, it was easy to hate the Taliban, hate Saddam Hussein, hate ISIS didn't exist, hate the radical extremist Muslims in the Middle East.
