Hi everybody, welcome back to Ask Alicia, the weekly series where you ask me questions and I answer them.

0:06.0

Maybe. Let's get to your first question this week. First question comes from Sony Kosio. Hi, Sony or Sonny. I hope I said

0:13.7

your name correctly. Sonny asked, what's the difference between carpet and rug? Super interesting question.

0:24.0

It's very simple, actually. A rug, usually,

0:32.5

is the piece of fabric that you bring into a room to set on the floor. Carpet, however, is usually used for the floor covering that is already in the room.

0:37.7

So for example, if you buy a house or if you move into a rental house or rental apartment,

0:43.3

carpet is usually the word that we use for the floor covering that is already there.

0:49.6

That's usually the word that we use.

0:51.5

Perhaps you will hear people refer to that as a rug, but usually people

0:55.7

refer to that as a carpet. So you could say like, oh no, I stained the carpet, or I'm not sure

1:01.8

I like the carpet color in this room. It sounds like carpet is something that is fixed in the room.

1:08.1

1:12.4

So carpet refers to this thing that is already in that space.

1:16.5

That's the floor covering there.

1:17.9

That's usually soft, okay?

1:19.8

On the other hand, rug refers to something you can usually roll up and you can roll it out

1:25.4

in the room and create your own covering for the floor. So these can be

1:30.7

maybe soft, they can be like beautiful like pieces of artwork. So a rug is something that you can

1:36.3

easily pick up and move to another room if you want. So it is also a floor covering, but it is not

1:43.0

fixed in place. So again, you may hear people kind of try to use carpet and rug interchangeably.

1:49.0

You may hear people do that, but basically a rug is something that is very easy to move from room to room.

1:56.0

One more word that I think is useful to include in this group then is the word mat.
