Summary

As the global drive to regulate Big Tech gains momentum, Asia has become a laboratory for new and at times controversial methods of bringing recalcitrant platforms to heel. Even more importantly, there is growing evidence that regulators in the region are taking their cues from one another, observing what approaches work and swapping notes on how best to tackle the gargantuan task of enforcement.

0:33.4	big tech and nowhere has this issue been more apparent than in Asia, where regulators
0:39.9	appear to be bouncing ideas off one another as they feel their way around how best to deal
0:44.9	with the challenges posed by technology giants. The special report has compiled the work of
0:50.4	our correspondence in India, South Korea, Japan and Australia, as well as jurisdictions in
0:56.1	Southeast Asia. And it brings an interesting regional perspective to what is very much a global
1:02.3	story. To talk us through this special report, I'm joined by Laurel Henning in Sydney,
1:07.6	Jet de Mazzos Santos in Jakarta and Jenny Lee in Seoul. And Laurel, I remember you
1:13.7	were the one who argued for this report to be written. So I suppose well done, firstly. But what
1:19.7	prompted that decision? Why is this such an interesting moment in Asia-Pacific legislation and
1:26.2	regulation of big tech.
1:28.3	Thanks, James. Well, we've seen a period of a lot of change recently in multiple Asia-Pacific
1:36.1	countries, changes of government, changes of leadership at key regulators who have all been
1:42.4	looking at big tech issues, be they competition, consumer, privacy
1:46.8	related for a long time. And so in this report, we've decided to take stock of those changes.
1:52.8	And then we've compared the approaches of different regulators across the region, as well as the
1:57.9	ways in which they might be learning from one another. And I think for me, the main takeaway from this report has been that there is such a broad
2:05.2	spectrum of approaches from regulators in the region, but perhaps where they may have been
2:10.7	positioned on that scale in the past is not necessarily where they're positioned today.
