So I'm old enough to remember a time when people had no idea that they were gay people in

the world.

When I grew up in the 70s and in the 80s, I remember sort of kind of knowing that they were

gay people and lesbians in the world, but I certainly didn't know any first standard.

I didn't know that I knew any because of all the people who were closeted.

And I remember thinking that, sure, you know, there might be the one or two gay people

on the planet, but certainly there aren't a lot of people who are gay and lesbian.

There were some characters on TV in the 70s.

I remember the TV show Soap with Billy Crystal.

He was gay and maybe trans, but I might have been too young to really get what that was

about.

I remember some episodes of All in the Family where they tried to tackle, you know, bigotry

with the main guy.

He was always bumping up against his bigotry and sort of overcoming it in small ways.

And but again, I think it just went over my head.

I barely understood heterosexuality when I was a kid, let alone homosexuality.

So it was a very distant thing to me.

But then in college, I entered college in late 1989.

And instantly I started meeting gay people, lesbians, and friends of mine started coming

out.

And there were, it just seemed like in my world anyway, there was a sudden explosion.

And then through the 90s, there were characters on TV and more awareness, more advocacy,
