to improve, not deteriorate. When I moved to Argentina in 2015, I thought I had done everything right. I knew two thousand words and how to use them. I had

practiced with several conversational dialogues until I could recite them flawlessly, and I'd spent

countless hours in Spanish conversations with my native-speaking teachers online.

My three-month reservation would have me staying in downtown Buenos Aires.

As my airplane crossed the equator, I felt on top of the world.

After disembarking, I took a taxi from the airport into the heart of the city.

After 30 minutes on winding roads,

the car turned onto one of the most incredible streets I'd ever seen, 9 de Julio, which runs straight

through the entire length of downtown. The driver dropped me off on the west edge of the street,

pointing me toward my Airbnb apartment a few blocks away.

My adventure began, and then I started getting lost.

Within a few days of moving to Buenos Aires, I managed to shatter almost all of my confidence.

I couldn't read my Airbnb house rules without a Spanish-English dictionary.
